About Course

Course Objectives

The main objective of the part-time Diploma in Engineering (Electronics) is to provide working adults with broad-based knowledge and skills in electronics, microcontroller-based applications, network engineering, cloud computing, control systems, and project management in order to upgrade their knowledge and skills required by the industry. This knowledge is highly sought by industry involved in electronics, automation and manufacturing. In general, assistant electronic engineers are in demand by most industries and with many job opportunities readily available for the graduates.

Course Description

Trainer's Profile

Ong Teck Soon

Ong Teck Soon holds a BSc in Computer Science from Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), an MSc in Consumer Electronics from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), an MSc in Mechatronics from the National University of Singapore (NUS), and an MSc in Education from the University of Western Australia (UWA).

Teck Soon spent 8 years working in the aerospace industry before joining Ngee Ann Polytechnic. During this time in aerospace, he specialized in avionics, focusing on the Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO), and retrofitting of military aircraft. This experience provided him with a deep understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of aerospace electronics.

After transitioning to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Teck Soon began teaching Electronic and Computer Engineering as well as Aerospace Electronics Engineering modules. In addition to lecturing, he has undertaken numerous industry consultancy projects for organizations such as MINDEF, GINTIC Institute of Manufacturing Technology, ADEMCO, and various SMEs.

Moreover, he has taught Power Electronics at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) in collaboration with Glasgow University, enriching his teaching portfolio and expertise in advanced electronics subjects.

Teck Soon's involvement in Assistive Technology has been significant. As a project lead for numerous assistive technology projects, he has presented papers at iCREATE conferences, contributing to advancements in this important field.

He is also a recipient of the National Day Commentary Award as well as the NP Level Teaching Award. He was conferred the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 2020 by the People's Association (PA) for his involvement in grassroots activities.

His key domain areas are Electronics, Microcontrollers, Coding, Engineering System Design, and Avionics, where he continues to develop and share his expertise through teaching, research, projects, and consultancy work.

Benjamin Wing Liang Ze

Benjamin holds a Master's in Science in Electrical Electronic Engineering from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and a Bachelor's with Honors in Electrical Power Engineering from Newcastle University. In addition, he has a diploma in Electrical Engineering from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, specialising in clean energy. During his academic journey, Benjamin successfully completed two final year projects involving the design of dynamic wireless chargers for electric vehicles using Ansoft Maxwell for simulation and hardware construction.

Benjamin’s academic background has equipped him with the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to excel in the field of electrical engineering. He have a strong understanding of electrical installation & systems, circuit analysis, power electronics and renewable energy sources.

Benjamin started his career in at ST Engineering Electronics, he led teams in testing and commissioning communication systems for railway projects, specifically the TeTRA radio system. Working both locally and overseas, Benjamin collaborated with various railway stakeholders, such as BTS and BEM in Thailand and SMRT and LTA in Singapore. Following his time at ST Engineering Electronics, Benjamin worked as a Senior Engineer in an electrical contractor, Bintai Kindenko. During his time in Bintai Kindenko, he worked on a few electrical projects on the provision of electrical services. Now at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Benjamin teaches the students from the Diploma of Electrical Engineering, where he teaches Electrical Installation Design, Electrical Fundamentals, Power Electronics and manage internships programmes.

Benjamin also teaches the National EV Specialist Safety programme, focusing on EV charging infrastructure’s electrical safety and provisions.

Analog Electronics & Applications (NP-013180)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge of the operating principles and the design characteristics of commonly used analogue devices and circuits. It also illustrates their applications in various practical circuits.
Digital Electronics & Applications (NP-013183)
This is a hands-on intensive module designed to help the students to design and build application projects based on digital electronics. It covers the fundamentals of digital electronics, the basic principles and techniques of digital system design. The main topics covered are Number systems, Boolean Algebra, Combinational logic circuits, Flip-flops and multivibrators and IC Counters.
Practical Electronics with Application to Control Systems (NP-013182)
This module is highly practical oriented with approximately 80% of the time devoted to hands-on activities. It covers the analysis, design and assembly of an electronic feedback control system. The module enables students to apply control theory in the real world. They design and build analogue electronic Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, electronic sensor module, DC Motor driver and many more. Computer is used to simulate analogue electronic circuits and circuit testing is performed using experimental approach. Measured data obtained using equipment such as DC Power Supply, Oscilloscope, Digital Meter and Signal Generator are recorded, plotted and interpreted.

Microcontroller & Interfacing (NP-013184)
This module aims to equip students with a basic foundation in microcontroller and Embedded System. Students will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge through meaningful practical exercises and lectures/tutorials. The knowledge and skills that the students acquire in this module will enable them to implement a microcontroller based system.
Programming (NP-0943PRG)
This practice-oriented module equips students with basic knowledge and skills in computer programming using a suitable high-level language. The main topics include basic computer programming concepts and fundamental programming constructs such as sequences, selection and repetition.
Server & Cloud Fundamentals (NP-013191)
This module covers the basics of Linux operating system, server and an overview of cloud computing. Concepts for Linux include the use of Linux commands to access and manage directories, files, setting of file security and access rights and basic servers’ implementation, such as DNS and DHCP in a network. For cloud computing, concepts include virtualization as a foundation for cloud computing and issues related to implementation of cloud services. It also covers simple architecture, design, implementation, management and security of cloud services.

Internet of Things (NP-013189)
This module aims to equip students with a basic knowledge about Internet of Things (IoT). Students will learn the system architecture of a typical IoT system with a good understanding on functionalities of its building blocks. They will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge through practical exercises and lectures/tutorials. Upon completion of the module, students are equipped with knowledge and skills to design and implement a simple IoT system prototype with off-the-shelf equipment/platforms/services.
Project Management in Digitalization (NP-0913PMD)
This module aims to equip students with knowledge of project management in engineering projects. In particular, modern day digital technologies will be introduced in the project management considerations. Students will learn the process of coordinating a project team and its resources to successfully execute a specific project from start to finish. Student will learn some project management tools which includes planning the activities, measuring the progress, allocating resources, identifying constraints and completing the task while respecting those constraints.
Quality Systems & Data Analytics (NP-0912QSDA)
This module provides the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply quality system management principles, statistical data analysis techniques, quality improvement tools, manufacturing management concepts in their workplace. Topics covered include Quality Management & Process Improvement; Six Sigma Methodology for defect reduction; Fundamentals of Statistics & Probability; Process Capability Analysis, Statistical Hypothesis Testing; Root Cause Analysis; Repeatability & Reproducibility for measurement system analysis; Design of Experiments for optimizing and improving products and processes; Statistical Process Control for quality assurance. Learners will be equipped with the knowledge on ethical use of data.

AC Technology & Applications (NP-0922ATA)
This module aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to understand the principles and operations of ac systems and devices in the industry. It covers single phase and three-phase systems, operations of power transformer, ac motor, ac generator and their applications. The module will also introduce students to electrical safety and proper use of modern measuring equipment for the industries.
Basic Electronics & Applications (NP-013179)
This module aims to introduce students the basics of electronic devices and some common applications. It includes an introduction to semiconductor physics as well as the construction, operating principles and common applications of diodes and transistors. Electronic circuits covered include rectifiers, voltage regulators, waveform clippers and surge protection. Calculations of average and root-mean-square (rms) values of periodic signals are also taught.
On completion of the module, students should be able to analyze and calculate the electrical parameters of diode and transistor circuits. They should have acquired sufficient knowledge and skills to design simple Zener voltage regulator as well as transistor circuits as an electronic switch or as a voltage amplifier.
DC Technology & Applications (NP-013177)
This module provides the students with the necessary knowledge and skills in solving dc network by using Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law and Thevenin Theorem. Topics covered include series circuits, parallel circuits and series-parallel circuits which are arranged in easy to understand style. Applications sections are included to establish a link between theoretical concepts of the topics and the real, practical world. Examples of the application section include how series circuits can be very effective in the design of safety equipment, how parallel circuits configuration is done in basic household wiring.

AI For Manufacturing Engineer (NP-0957AME)
This module introduces students with the technical skills to apply machine learning algorithms and deploying practical Artificial Intelligence (Al) models with an industrial edge controller for anomaly detection and predictive maintenance. The course will also cover the essential concepts and background for data analysis on supervised and unsupervised machine learning models and their applications in advanced manufacturing.
Data Handling and Information Visualisation (NP-0958DHIV)
This module covers data importing, cleaning, interpreting and visualizing. The students will learn advanced methods with Tableau software. This module deals with methods used to manage and analyse real world large datasets and present the results in visually understandable way. It helps to solve the complex engineering challenges present in the data. In this module, students will be learning new techniques and tools in Tableau to become more resourceful for the engineering industry.
Machine Learning Systems for Engineers (NP-0959MLSE)
This module will help students to apply AI techniques to their fields in order to get accurate solutions. This module covers the basics of artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning. It deals with different types of learning techniques like: supervised, unsupervised and reinforced. The concept of features, data handling, training and testing will be explained. It focuses more on the theory, design and applications of artificial neural networks (ANN)

Network Fundamentals (NP-013186)
This module covers the introduction to the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation knowledge and skills for network infrastructure. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes.
Routing & Switching (NP-013187)
This module describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network. Students learn how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality. By the end of this module, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with virtual LANs and interVLAN routing in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
Scaling & Connecting Networks (NP-013188)
This module describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in larger and more complex networks and on the WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in a complex network. Students learn how to configure routers and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this module, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, and STP in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Students will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement a WLAN in a small-to-medium network, configure PPPoE, GRE, single-homed eBGP, extended IPv4 and IPv6 ACLs., SNMP and Cisco SPAN, QoS and the trends in networking including Cloud, virtualization, and SDN.

Electrical Circuit Analysis (NP-010018)
This module introduces students to the concepts and theorems which are needed in the field of electrical engineering technology. The topics include circuit analysis and network theorems, single-phase and three-phase system analysis, power measurement and power factor correction, the "a" operator and per unit system, harmonics, and transients. The module provides the foundation to equip students in analysing electrical circuits, applying the relevant theories and techniques to solve and troubleshoot circuit problems, and designing electrical systems.
PV Cell And Module (NP-0955PCM)
This module covers the basics from light to semiconductor and PV cell/module design and characterization. Topics include the solar energy, semiconductor and junctions, working principles of PV cell, factors that can affect the PV cell’s output, design considerations of PV cell/module, new cell and module technologies, general PV module failure modes and detection methods. The core IEC standards such as IEC61215/61730 and UL61730 PV modules will also be introduced. Students, work in group, to analyse specification and performance of solar PV modules available in the local market.
PV System Design & Integration (NP-0956PSDI)
This module introduces the various components and their functionalities in the formation of a PV system. It also provides the guidelines for the selection and sizing of these constituents to allow their proper compatibility to operate as an integrated system. Stand-alone and grid-tied systems will be covered. Practical hands-on sessions will also be included to ensure trainees could do experiments and make measurements on PV modules, inverters, power flow, equipment protection, system performance, and battery management. Design, installation, testing, and commissioning of PV system according to SS638, SS601, and Power-Grid Transmission Code and relevant IEC codes will also be discussed in this module. Students, work in group, to design a grid-connected PV system.
