Course Information

The Specialist Diploma in Cloud Security (SDCS) course equips students with technical skills and competencies required to carry out critical work functions and key tasks related to cyber and cloud security.

It is a cloud focused curriculum, where all the modules have an emphasis on cloud computing, cloud native architecture, cloud operations, and cloud security. This is in tune with the increasing cloud computing adoption and to solve the cloud security skills gap faced by many organizations. This course also trains students in core offensive and defensive skills such as vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, digital forensics investigation, cyber incident handling and response, and cyber governance, risk, and compliance.

The SDCS course graduates can take up the job role of an Associate Cloud Security Analyst, and Associate Security Analyst, or an entry level/junior position in the following job roles: Cloud Security Engineer, Cloud Security Specialist, and Cloud Security Architect, Cyber Risk Analyst, Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing Analyst, Security Operations Analyst, Forensics Investigator, and Security Engineer.

Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMC) 

The Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMCs) are bite-sized part-time courses for individuals to acquire new skills or deepen relevant skills, without the need to pursue a full diploma. The SBMCs are modules selected from part-time diploma programmes and candidates may choose to complete the remaining modules within the validity period to be awarded the full diploma qualification. The validity period is 5 years for a CET Diploma, up to 4 years for an Advanced Diploma, and 2 years for a Specialist Diploma and Diploma (Conversion). Post-Diploma Certificate in Cloud Native Architecture & Security (TGS-2021005349)

The post-diploma certificate in cloud native architecture & security trains students in planning, configuring, deploying, and implementing cloud solutions. It also trains students in various techniques to design and implement a secure infrastructure on cloud platform, essential skills of managing secure containerized applications across multiple hosts in a dynamically scheduled, microservices-oriented cloud native environment, and skills of applying the advanced cloud security knowledge in practical situations such as multi-cloud environments.

Cloud Computing Practice
The Cloud Computing Practice module covers topics such as setting up a cloud solution environment, planning and configuring a cloud solution, deploying, and implementing a cloud solution, ensuring successful operation of a cloud solution, and configuring access and security. Students will also learn about deploying cloud applications, monitoring cloud operations of multiple projects, maintaining enterprise solutions to ensure that they meet target performance metrics, and managing basic security and compliance aspects of the cloud platform and the shared security model.

Cloud Security Management
The Cloud Security Management module covers topics such as configuring access within a cloud solution environment, configuring network security, managing data protection, managing operations with a cloud solution environment, and ensuring cloud security compliance. Students will also learn about various techniques to design and implement a secure infrastructure on cloud platform, security best practices and industry security requirements for cloud security technologies, administrating identity and access management, defining organizational structure and policies, collecting and analyzing cloud platform logs and managing incident responses.

The Cloud Native Architecture module covers topics such as the transformative development of cloud security practices, embedding security into the DevOps process, the basics of cloud native architecture, cloud application lifecycle management, cloud networking and security, cluster Maintenance, and logging / monitoring of cloud applications. Students will also learn about the essential skills of managing containerized applications across multiple hosts in a dynamically scheduled, microservices-oriented cloud native environment.

Advanced Cloud Security
The Advanced Cloud Security module covers emerging and advanced cloud computing concepts, architecture and design, cloud data security, cloud platform & infrastructure security, cloud application security, cloud security operations, and legal, risk and compliance of cloud computing. Students will also learn the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for securing critical assets in the cloud, and obtain the essential skills of applying the advanced cloud security knowledge in practical situations such as multi-cloud environments.

Networking & IT Infrastructure
The Networking & IT Infrastructure module covers topics such as network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, and security fundamentals. Students will learn how to install, operate, configure, maintain, and verify basic IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The module covers configuring network components such as switches, routers, and wireless LAN controllers; managing network devices; troubleshooting network problem; identifying basic security threats; and implementing network security, standards, and protocols.
Windows & Linux Server Administration
The Windows & Linux Server Administration module covers the latest server technologies including virtualization, security, network-attached storage, and disaster recovery. Students will learn about the concepts and the technologies of Windows Server administration, Windows-based networking, Active Directory, account management, and system recovery tools and concepts. Students will also learn about common tasks in major distributions of Linux, including the Linux command line, basic maintenance, installing and configuring workstations, security, Linux troubleshooting & diagnostics, networking, and automation and scripting.
AI tools & techniques for Cybersecurity
o The AI tools & techniques for Cybersecurity module trains students on various cybersecurity related AI tools & techniques used by the industry. Students will learn how to setup, configure, train, execute, operate, and manage these AI tools & techniques to harden security, detect cyber-attacks, respond to cyber incidents, and restore normal operations.
Cybersecurity Fundamentals
The Cybersecurity Fundamentals module covers baseline skills needed to perform core cybersecurity functions. It provides an overview of the various domains of cyber security and the essential principles of network security; compliance and operational Security; threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities; application, data and host security; access control and integrity management; and cryptography and PKI.

Trainer's Profile

Mohamed Saifulamri Omar

Mohamed Saifulamri Omar received his Bachelor of Applied Science (Computer Engineering) and a Master of Science in Information Studies from Nanyang Technological University. On top of that, he also holds a Master of Business Administration from Victoria Graduate School of Business. Mohamed has the following professional certifications: 

  • CISSP, ISC2 
  • GPEN, SANS 
  • CCNA, Cisco 
  • CEH, EC-Council 
  • CHFI, EC-Council 
  • ECSA, EC-Council 
  • CySA+, CompTia 

Mohamed is also a certified EC-Council and Cisco instructor training Certified Ethical Hacking (CEH) and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) courses respectively. He has more than a decade of teaching cybersecurity to young learners and working adults. Currently, he is with Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) imparting his cybersecurity know-hows to NP students and adult learners.  

Apart from that, Mohamed is also actively involved with WorldSkills (Cybersecurity) competitions. He is part of the Technical Working Group (TWG) committee that oversees the implementation of WorldSkills (Cybersecurity) competition. He also worked closely with agencies such as Cybersecurity Agency of Singapore (CSA) and Singapore Police Force (SPF) in creating cybersecurity awareness through Youth Cybersecurity Exploratory Program (YCEP) bootcamp.  

Fabian Ng

An educator with over 35 years of teaching experience in tertiary education and consultation, Fabian specializes in the domains Networking and Cybersecurity. He has a MSc from Loughborough University, UK and BA(Hons) from University of Nottingham, UK. He also obtained his certification in Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator (CHFI). Additionally, he is certified in Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP). 

Over the years of his educational journey, he has taught many subject areas such as Networking, Data Communication, Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, etc, where he has also written several textbooks including:

  • “Web Server Administration & Security, Prentice Hall 
  • “System Security”, Prentice Hall 
  • “Fundamentals of Mobile & Wireless Security”, Prentice Hall 
  • “Local Area Networks”, McGraw Hill 

On top of these, has also presented and published several conference papers, and was also member of the International Papers Evaluation Panel, IFIP 8th & 11th International Information Security Conference. In additionally, he has also conducted several networking and cybersecurity for adults both locally and overseas as well as research projects including Smart Cards & Secure Data Disposition. 

Fabian has also won several awards including the Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI)Education Award, in 1998 and Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Teaching Awards. He was also awarded the Public Service Star (BBM), for his dedicated service to the community.  

In Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he has taught in several diploma courses i.e. ‘Diploma in Information Technology’, Diploma in Multimedia Technology (retired), Diploma in Information Security (renamed) and currently Diploma in Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics., where he has taught in numerous modules such as Operating Systems, Data Communications and Networking, Information Security, Cryptography, Digital Forensics, Governance and Data Protection, Cybersecurity Risk Management & Compliance, etc. 

Sun Lei

Sun Lei holds a Master of Computing in Information Systems from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. 

Before transitioning to academia full-time in 2013, Mr. Sun gained extensive industry experience in cybersecurity, including security monitoring, defending, auditing, incident response, and risk management.  

At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Mr. Sun’s academic focus centers on cloud security, network security, and cryptography. He actively engages in industry conferences and contributes to curriculum development. His research paper, “Synergizing Next-Generation Firewalls and Defense-in-Depth Strategies in a Dynamic Cybersecurity Landscape”, was presented at the 4th International Conference on Computer Network Security and Software Engineering (CNSSE 2024) and published in the SPIE Digital Library. He also presented at the Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference (RPIC 2024) on the topic “Server & Cloud Security - A Learner-Centred Approach with Industry in Curriculum”. 

Mr. Sun teaches a range of courses, including the Specialist Diploma in Cybersecurity Practice, Specialist Diploma in Cloud Security, Google Cloud Architect Bootcamp, Cyber Security Essentials, and Ethical Hacking & Penetration Testing.

Authorized learning materials for the following professional certifications would be provided as part of this course. However, in addition to what is covered in this course, students would have to put in extra preparation, time, effort, and dedication, to attempt these professional certification exams. Exam vouchers can be purchased at academic pricing.

A local Polytechnic Diploma or a recognized Degree in Information and Digital Technologies, and/or Engineering.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis, such as, based on evidence of at least 2 years of relevant working experience; or supporting evidence of competency readiness in the field of Information and Digital Technologies, and/or Engineering. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test.
