More than providing academic and social support to children, the role of a student care professional is key in ensuring that children develop holistically to their full potential in a safe, structured and nurturing environment.
Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMC)
The Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMCs) are bite-sized part-time courses for individuals to acquire new skills or deepen relevant skills, without the need to pursue a full diploma.
The SBMCs are modules selected from part-time diploma programmes and candidates may choose to complete the remaining modules within the validity period to be awarded the full diploma qualification. The validity period is 5 years for a CET Diploma, up to 4 years for an Advanced Diploma, and 2 years for a Specialist Diploma and Diploma (Conversion).

Learning Outcomes
The course introduces you to the student care services landscape and strategies to manage students’ behaviour, including challenging behaviours. You will also understand and learn how to curate programmes that develop the students’ social emotional learning needs.
What’s more, you will gain supervisory knowledge to manage a centre that provides student related services that includes coaching and supervision of staff.

*Participants who had achieved the Statement of Attainment for WSQ Introductory to Student Care Centre will be exempted from the module "Understanding Student Services"
Participants who had passed all the assessments for "Working with Children: Behaviour and Guidance" will be exempted from the module "Managing Challenging Behaviour".
Trainer's Profile
Farah Abdullah is a seasoned educator with over 15 years of enriching experience in the realm of education. As an MOE-trained English language and Social Studies teacher, Farah has honed her expertise in crafting effective teaching methodologies tailored to the diverse learning needs and abilities of her students.
Currently serving as the Senior Manager for Critical Core Skills at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Farah brings a wealth of knowledge and specialisation in literacy and communication to her role. She is also actively involved as an adult trainer for the Diploma in Care and Programme (Student Services & Coaching), where she leads modules focused on classroom management, imparting invaluable skills to future educators.
Before her tenure at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Farah made significant contributions to the educational landscape during her time at the National Library Board (NLB). She played a pivotal role in conceptualising engaging children's programmes across public libraries, schools, and community organisations. Additionally, Farah spearheaded the development and implementation of editorial standards for NLB's various publications, including newsletters, resource guides, activity kits, reading recommendations, and book reviews.
Farah's academic credentials further underscore her dedication to lifelong learning and professional growth. She holds a Master of Science in Information Studies from NTU, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from NIE, and a Bachelor of Arts from NUS, reflecting her commitment to excellence in both pedagogy and information management.
With her extensive background in education, strategic leadership, and commitment to enhancing learning experiences, Farah Abdullah continues to inspire and empower learners within and beyond the academic sphere, leaving a lasting impact on education and literacy initiatives.
Dr Glen Ng has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Canberra, a Master in Counselling from Monash University, a Diploma in Clinical Supervision (Counselling) from Counselling and Care Centre and a Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis from London College of Clinical Hypnosis and Tan Tock Seng Hospital as well as a WSQ Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP).
Dr Glen has over 25 years of experiences in youth counselling, mentoring and working with youths with special needs.
While working as a Senior Probation Officer and subsequently a Volunteer Probation Officer with the Ministry of Social & Family Development (MSF), Dr Glen has managed more than 100 cases of youth offenders from minor (underage smoking) to major offences (rioting). He was also the Senior Counsellor at Rotary Family Service Centre where he had supervised counsellors, caseworkers and worked with clients to develop programmes for the young and the elderly.
Dr Glen also held several executive positions, first as the Vice-President (Executive Committee) for the Singapore Association for the Deaf, and subsequently founding member and General Manager for Dialogue in the Dark Singapore, where he had facilitated leadership workshops for more than 60 corporate clients, including participants from HSBC Bank, PSA Singapore and INSEAD Business School. He is presently also an EXCO member with the Youth Work Association Singapore (YWAS).
As an educator, Dr Glen helmed the retired “Diploma in Psychology Studies” at the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where he led a team of counsellors, psychologists, and researchers and also taught in key modules, which include “Introduction to Social Services”, “Fundamentals of Counselling”, “Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship”, and “Community Psychology”. As the Course Chair of the diploma, Dr Glen has mentored more than 200 students aged 17-19 years old, where he advised them on a range of common youth issues.
In his role as Programme Lead for Youth Engagement & Development, Dr Glen has partnered with leading agencies such as YWAS, TOUCH Cyber Wellness, MSF, CHAT, Singapore Children’s Society, Central Narcotics Bureau, New Life Community Services and Trybe for short courses which includes “Knowing & Engaging Youth”, “Youth & Technology” and the inaugural “Onboarding Course for Youth Work Professionals”. Currently Dr Glen is also managing and teaching in the Specialist Diploma in Youth Development & Mental Wellness (SDYM).

You are required to complete 5 modular certificates within 5-year validity period to be awarded the Diploma qualification.
Skills-Based Modular Course
Upon successful completion of the Skills-Based Modular Course, students will receive a Statement of Results. Skills-Based Modular Courses completed can be considered for credit exemption for the corresponding CET Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Specialist Diploma.
Entry Requirements
The following GCE ‘O’ Level grades and with at least 1 year of relevant work experience:
– English Language (Grade 1-7)
– Mathematics (Grade 1-6)
– One other subject (Grade 1-6)
OR NITEC with GPA >= 3.5
OR NITEC with GPA >= 3.0 and with at least 1 year of relevant work experience
OR Higher NITEC with GPA >= 2.0
OR Higher NITEC with GPA >= 1.5 and with at least 1 year of relevant work experience
OR NITEC in Technology or Services with GPA >= 3.5 and with at least 1 year of relevant working experience
OR Higher NITEC in Technology or Services with GPA >=2.0 and with at least 1 year of relevant working experience
OR relevant Advanced WSQ Certificate (or higher) and Level 6 WSQ Workplace Literacy SOA and Workplace Numeracy SOA and with at least 1 year of relevant working experience
OR applicants with at least 2 years of relevant working experience may apply for the course
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
Course Fees
Funding period for this course is from 1 Apr 2023 to 31 Dec 2024.
SkillsFuture Credit
All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their $500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. Visit the SkillsFuture Credit website to choose from the courses available on the Training Exchange course directory.
