Sharon Ismail

Sharon graduated from NUS with a double major in English Language and Theatre Studies. After her BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies, she completed her MA in Performance Studies at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, London. Her studies coincided with her professional theatre debut in Singapore and culminated in a television award at Mediacorp Suria’s Pesta Perdana, for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She has since won the award thrice.

Her parallel career on television saw several nominations for Best Host in an Info-tainment Programme. She was one of the anchor hosts on Suria’s Sunday morning show for three years, which honed her interviewing skills and how to prepare guests to be camera-ready. She continues to be active in television and on social media today.

Apart from theatre and television, Sharon’s areas of expertise extend to various aspects of media, such as media relations, strategic planning, internal communication, and moderation of conference panels. Her primary work languages are English and Malay, though she also speaks Mandarin.

She is also a published children’s book writer, with her first book, What Sallamah Didn’t Know, adopted by MOE as a P6 English text under the STELLAR syllabus. This book has been translated into Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Its sequel, The Ghost with Dirty Feet, was adapted into a musical for children by Teater Ekamatra in 2024.

In the past 10 years, Sharon has been part of advisory panels at Mediacorp Malay News and Current Affairs, IMDA’s Programme Advisory Committee (English), Mendaki’s Youth Excellence Awards, and MSF’s Alliance for Action to Strengthen Marriages & Family Relationships (AFAM).

Sharon currently teaches Media Entrepreneurship, and Career & Professional Preparation. In her 20-year career in education, she has taught various communication, innovation, sociology and acting modules in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and UniSIM.

As part of the school management team at the School of Film & Media Studies, Sharon continues to hone her leadership and people-management skills as she oversees teams for internships, overseas programmes, and general student life. On occasion, she coaches millennials when ex-students approach her with “adulting” questions on career development and life decisions.
