Electric Vehicle Electrical Fundamentals and Safety (24h)
This module focuses on electrical fundamentals that lay the foundation to understanding subsequent EV and HEV topics.

Electric Vehicle Charging and Powertrain (16h)
Electric vehicles are exposed to high risk during charging. This module will introduce the different types of EV chargers, their fundamentals, operations, charging modes, charging characteristics and the EV charging process. Coverage includes the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manual on EV and/or HEV charging and types of personal protective equipment (PPE) for operating in a high-voltage (HV) work environment.

Electric Vehicle Battery Management (16h)
This module will cover the following: Types of electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) battery design and configuration; EV and/or HEV battery characteristics and charging capacity; Fundamentals of EV and HEV battery charging principles; Functions and operations of battery management system; Types of tools and equipment to perform EV and HEV battery measurement; Safety procedures and methods on electrical isolation on EV and HEV battery; Methods to conduct EV and HEV battery inspection; Methods to conduct EV and HEV battery evaluation; Methods to store and transport EV and/or HEV batteries; Organisational standards operating procedures (SOPs) on EV and HEV battery management; Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manual on EV and HEV battery management; and Types of personal protective equipment (PPE) for operating in a high-voltage (HV) work environment.

Electric Vehicle Maintenance (8h)
Following the guideline of NESS TSC on Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Maintenance Management, this module covers the fundamental knowledge of EV and HEV routine servicing of non-high voltage automotive components

Course Description

Under the Singapore Green Plan 2030 (SGP30), LTA has a comprehensive EV Roadmap to ramp up the efforts for EV adoption, such as setting a target of 60,000 EV charging points by 2030. With the advancement of EV technology, the cost of buying an EV and ICE vehicle may be similar by the mid-2020s. As the prices of EVs become more attractive, and more accessibility of charging infrastructure, more car owners will buy EVs. EV is new, especially to the independent workshops, they need to upgrade their staff for the EV technology.
Currently there are more than 10,000 staff working in automotive industry, government needs to spend 10 to 20 years to upgrade them on the EV technology, there is a high demand in EV training. We have been successfully conducting automotive courses for the industry, especially the hybrid vehicle technology, it will benefit us in offering the electric vehicle course.

Target Audience

This course is suitable for technicians, technical executives, customer service advisors, workshop managers, engineers and personnel in automotive engineering.

TRAINER'S PROFILE

Benjamin Wing Liang Ze

Benjamin holds a Master's in Science in Electrical Electronic Engineering from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and a Bachelor's with Honors in Electrical Power Engineering from Newcastle University. In addition, he has a diploma in Electrical Engineering from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, specialising in clean energy. During his academic journey, Benjamin successfully completed two final year projects involving the design of dynamic wireless chargers for electric vehicles using Ansoft Maxwell for simulation and hardware construction.

Benjamin’s academic background has equipped him with the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to excel in the field of electrical engineering. He have a strong understanding of electrical installation & systems, circuit analysis, power electronics and renewable energy sources.

Benjamin started his career in at ST Engineering Electronics, he led teams in testing and commissioning communication systems for railway projects, specifically the TeTRA radio system. Working both locally and overseas, Benjamin collaborated with various railway stakeholders, such as BTS and BEM in Thailand and SMRT and LTA in Singapore. Following his time at ST Engineering Electronics, Benjamin worked as a Senior Engineer in an electrical contractor, Bintai Kindenko. During his time in Bintai Kindenko, he worked on a few electrical projects on the provision of electrical services. Now at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Benjamin teaches the students from the Diploma of Electrical Engineering, where he teaches Electrical Installation Design, Electrical Fundamentals, Power Electronics and manage internships programmes.

Benjamin also teaches the National EV Specialist Safety programme, focusing on EV charging infrastructure’s electrical safety and provisions.
